Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) owes its impressive colors to the mineral composition of its soils and the geological processes that have occurred over millions of years.

Meaning of the colors:

  • ❤️ Red: Clay rich in iron oxide (laterite) - represents the blood of Pachamama
  • 💚 Green: Presence of chlorite and magnesium oxide - fertility of the earth
  • 💛 Yellow: Presence of sulfur and carbonates - energy and vitality
  • 🤎 Brown: Mixture of magnesium oxide minerals and limestone - connection with the earth
  • 🤍 White: Quartz sand and limestone rock - purity and spirituality
  • 🧡 Orange: Clay with presence of sulfurous minerals

Fun facts:

  • The mountain was known locally for centuries, but became world-famous around 2015
  • Its original name is "Vinicunca" (which means "mountain of colors" in Quechua)
  • Due to climate change, melting ice has been revealing more colors in recent years
  • The colors are more intense after the rainy season (April-May)

Important: It is forbidden to touch or remove the minerals from the mountain to preserve the landscape for future generations. Respect nature!
